The Journey to Uttarakhand – A Region of Natural Beauty
A group of fifteen of us recently had the opportunity to retreat to the breathtaking state of Uttarakhand — and oh, what a divine experience it was! I had been there before, yet I had forgotten how glorious it truly is. Having just visited Switzerland, I can honestly say that Uttarakhand is not only beautiful but also deeply divine. It was such a blessing to have both the time and the chance to experience this Dev Bhumi — the “Land of the Gods” — in the company of angels. Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, the state truly lives up to its name. From the moment we arrived, we were embraced by the serene energy of the mountains, the pure, untouched beauty of nature, and the profound sense of history and mythology that permeates every valley and temple.
The rolling hills, snow-capped peaks, and majestic mountains that seem to touch the sky left us all in awe. Every turn revealed a new postcard-perfect view — whether it was lush green valleys, the beautiful and rare flowers, sparkling rivers, or the endless expanse of sky meeting the rugged mountaintops. It felt as though Nature herself was putting on a grand show, just for us. We were blessed with perfect sunny days throughout
But what made the experience truly unforgettable were the people of Uttarakhand. Their kindness, humility, strength, and tireless spirit touched our hearts deeply. Whether it was sharing a smile, guiding us through narrow mountain paths, or welcoming us into their temples and homes … their warmth made us feel like family.
Visiting the various pilgrim sites — from ancient shrines snuggly set in the hills, to grand temples echoing with devotion — this was a spiritual journey in itself. The devotional energy of the people, the sound of bells and chants, and the fragrance of incense and dhoop created a sacred atmosphere that stirred something deep within us. It was a truly divine experience, one that reminded us of the deep-rooted spiritual essence of this beautiful land. Something ignited in each one of us even though we were from different religious backgrounds and countries.
At Haridwar, we were fortunate to witness the Ganga Aarti at the ghats — a breath-taking spiritual ceremony where hundreds gathered in a state of holy reverence. Haridwar was infused with faith, and the love and light of devotion. As the flames of the large aarti lamps danced across the sacred river, and chants filled the air, we felt a powerful sense of unity, peace, and spiritual awakening. We were united in the oneness of the moment, and we were touched by the atmosphere and aura of this place. Suddenly all our tiredness from the 10 hour drive disappeared.
The whole place was filled with a spiritual aura, and a sense of palpable faith in all the souls who were present witnessing and participating in this community of devotion – singing along with the aarti tune and shouting “Jai” and raising arms when prompted. We were all absorbing the sights, scents and sounds of the place. At such times, it is easy to understand why so many souls who embark on their own spiritual journey are drawn to this ancient holy land of Bharat.
The Himalayan mountains have a quiet way of teaching patience, humility, and presence. Surrounded by their timeless stillness, many of us felt an inner shift — a gentle moment to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with ourselves, and with something far greater and more majestic awakening from within.
The pristine landscapes also reminded us of the urgent need to preserve such natural wonders. Uttarakhand is not just a travel destination — it’s a sacred trust, a place that deserves care, respect, and protection for generations to come.
What a wonderful journey this was to experience being in the heart of devotion, under the canopy of Nature and feeling the presence and Grace of the Divine. This journey wasn’t just a trip — it was a soul-touching experience that will stay with each of us, forever, always reminding us of the stillness of the mountains and the warmth of the people.
