It’s Time to Let Go and Surrender

“There comes a time when nothing is meaningful
except surrendering to love.”
Rumi
True surrender is about surrendering the way we think, changing old habits, behaviours, upsets, sorrows and of course the ego. The way in is also our way out, so take time to reflect and be open to new solutions. Really in a way we gain so much when we surrender to a higher power, to spiritual and Divine guidance.
Through-out my life I have found the practice of surrender has stood me in good stead. This is how I personally set my mind, after doing all the preparation work for any event, then I simply surrender everything to God. At the beginning of every spiritual retreat, we often give the example of the army retreating in a battle to create a fresh strategy, to create a new sense of direction before venturing out again into battle. It is more a case of learning how to shift perspective in situations and helping others change their old strategies and ways of thinking too, to learn how to live healthier and happier lives.
For souls on a spiritual journey, this is the turning point. Exactly at the moment of making a retreat from the old, we need to have surrendered our ego if we are to save the army and the honour of our soul. If we keep fighting a losing battle, if we do not change our approach, then we lose everything. Therefore, sometimes it is wise to just surrender to the moment and change our perspective and change our thinking.

“When setting out on a journey, do not seek advice
from those who have never left home.”
Rumi
If we cannot find a way through something, then we can work to find a way around an obstacle or challenge. Look to find a new way. This is where the point of surrender and letting go helps so much. When we just ask God and the Universe for help, when we are open to Divine guidance, then it arrives in perfect time, and often in magical ways. But it all depends on our ability to let go of trying to control a situation, person and outcome. To trust, and to just flow with the positive energy of life, and have faith that we will indeed be guided to the most perfect solution. Almost without any effort on our part… well, some little effort, because first we have to ask for help and then we have to surrender our desire to control, and surrender that small thing called the big ego!
Actually, when we let go and let God, when we surrender, it is not that we are losing anything, to the contrary we are gaining so much. It is indeed a great fortune to let go of the unnecessary anxiety and worrisome thinking, it is such a relief for our mind. It is our resistance that makes us tired, because we expend so much time and energy. When we stop pushing against situations we become open to solutions. But we have to get ourselves out of the way. This is our work. When we allow God and the universal forces for good to work with us, our pathway to happiness opens up.
It is pretty much the same in both a military and spiritual sense. Sometimes, life can feel like we are constantly in combat… an endless struggle to survive, to make relationships work, to balance life and meet the demands of everyone around us. The enemy seems to be an invisible and silent one. We can’t put our finger on it, but we just know that we are not winning in this battle. The strategy we have been using is not working. We have to try something new. We have to surrender our attachment to our old mind-sets and our old ideas. So, with a little humility and the willingness to change, along with keeping the ego in check, then this will help us to move in the right direction.
How about turning things around? Why not just change our perception? Let us call it a game, a dance, a symphony… As soon as we change the verb, we change our feelings and in turn we change our destiny. It’s all in our hands. Surrender need not mean to submit, concede, to fail or to give in, but to rise to a new awareness and learning… to embrace a new way and freedom, but to surrender the anxiety, stress and worry.

“When you do things from your soul, you feel
a river moving in you, a joy.”
Rumi
So today spend some time thinking about what it is you need to surrender to make way for the light. Perhaps it is the endless ego; or some of those old arrogant ideas and opinions; it could be all those false beliefs that stop us from progressing on our spiritual path. We must re-interpret the language we use. If we look at surrender, not as losing or giving up something, but more about what we are gaining, then we will be able to see where we are bringing benefit to ourselves. Only then we will find that surrendering that which is not useful is easier than we think.
It’s Time… to let go and be ready to receive our fortune of happiness.
