The Powerful Sound of Silence
We were born out of silence and we will return to silence.
Silence is a beautiful innate quality, which we don’t always appreciate. It is part of who we are, and it is a mighty virtue although it seems to be shy and quiet. Silence is golden, so they say, and yet so many rarely experience the beauty of true silence.
In fact, instead of embracing silence, we often run from it. If, as some do, you fear silence then it’s good to take a courageous look at why, and to take the plunge into a new experience.
Have you ever spent some time in conscious and thoughtful silence? For example, a few hours, half a day, a whole day, a week or a month? Then you would know how uplifting and enlightening it is, as well as experiencing the soothing calm, peace and quiet that is created in your life. Not to mention how much time and energy are saved!
When someone remains silent it is hard to know what they are thinking. They could be silent in wisdom, or in stupidity. But if you are tuned in, you will see that the truly silent person is not just silent of mouth, but also silent of mind.
I heard the other day that even business people, executives and politicians are seeking ‘Silence’ retreats! It’s as though the world has realized that we’ve gone too far with gadgets and gimmicks. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that there is nothing ‘out there’ that can really give us security, happiness, or peace of mind if we don’t have it within us already.
Our silence has to be a sweet silence. Not a busy silence, meaning that there is a lot going on inside – planning, analyzing, criticizing, etc, but a silence in which we come into harmony with others and the world around us.
Silence is a power. When a normally silent person speaks, people listen! Because it is understood that maybe they have been wise enough to sift through all the noise and chatter, and have come up with the meaningful essence!
Time spent in silence can be very nourishing and rejuvenating. As in sleep, it is a time to refill the depleted energy and charge the batteries. In silence we take stock of what we have and where we need to be headed. It is like pressing a pause button in our life and allowing ourselves to catch up with what is real and important. And more: to spend time in real silence of the mind allows the self to detach from the chattering mind, to detach from the ego self, and to begin to see ourselves for who we truly are. We see the bigger picture, the whole story, we see the drama for what it is, and begin to understand our part in it.
When there is deep silence, we are able to have an experience of the soul as it is – naked, pure and free. No amount of sound or words are able to give us an experience in the way that silence can. Take for example the experience of soul consciousness. We can talk about the subject until the cows come home, but it is only through the experience of deep silence that you will be able to have a profound experience of soul consciousness.
And when we come back into sound it is with a renewed awareness and new zest for life.
When we have truly understood the drama of life, then we will become totally silent, for there will be no more questions to ask of why and what… everything has been understood!
Try this week to spend at least some time in silence. Not just away from electronic gadgets, but in a truly deep silence in which there are few, but powerful thoughts.
It’s Time… to experience the sound of deep silence. Recharge the depleted batteries and begin to get to know the real self!
